I am embarking on an a more than 1 year long Black Belt Test that will challenge me physically, mentally, and spiritually. Over the next 18 months I will be training, refining my diet, feeding my soul, gaining new knowledge, helping others, and inspiring my students to challenge themselves to fully engage in their own Black Belt Tests and take their martial arts training "out of the dojo and into the world"!
The Test Requirements
50,000 Push Ups
50,000 Sit Ups/Ab Exercises
1000 Rounds of Sparring
1000 Repetitions of a Single Form
1000 Miles of Running, Walking, Biking, and/or Swimming
1000 Personal Acts of Kindness
1000 Written Meditations or Prayers
52 Journal Entries
Read & Review 12 books
Profile 10 Living Heroes
Daily Meditation
3 days of Empathy Training
16 Environmental Self Defense Projects
Chronicle My Diet Daily
Bully Defense Project
Dietary Defense Project
The culmination of the test will be a home building project in Greensboro, Alabama in April 2013!
“To do all of this requires a level of self-discipline few people can muster. The push-ups and crunches (which may be changed to other exercises to compensate for injuries) gives the participant a form of strength-training that he or she can do anywhere. The 1000 rounds of sparring and 1000 reps of a form insures that the participant is a practicing martial artist. The 1000 acts of kindness allows us to demonstrate how easy it is to make kindness a daily practice. And the 1000 mile walk is to illustrate the power of putting one foot in front of another. All of these things are meant to show, by your example, how the seemingly impossible can become reality with small daily effort. This is a form of self-defense training for one’s life.”~Tom Callos
I invite you to join myblackbelttest and document your own Black Belt Test!

With practice, what begins as…

Another week gone by...had a set back in PT but after a few days off I am feeling better and hope to get back to Ju Jitsu this week! It has been a long road back but I am determined to make it happen this year and my doc and physical therapist are all for it too! It is great to finally have someone in your corner trying to get you back in the game rather than telling you to hang it up and find something else to do!
Reading a lot this week and therefore now have too many ideas…

This is the first time in at least 25 years that I have been sick (other than a little cold) and it hit me so hard even my daughter was freaked (she's never seen me sick) not to mention my…
